Will We Get Burned by The Scorch Trials?

Next month, the movie adaptation of the book The Scorch Trials, the sequel to The Maze Runner, hits theaters. I really enjoyed the first film. I thought that overall it was well done. Particularly, actor Dylan O’Brien’s performance as Thomas was wonderful. I’m a little biased on this one because I love Dylan O’Brien.

Anyway, I’m very excited for this film to come out. I just finished the book a few days ago and I had previously seen a trailer for the film when it debuted at the San Diego Comic Con (via the Internet of course because I wasn’t at Comic Con). I had a couple of questions after watching the trailer. A couple of them got answered for me after finishing the book. One question that I have is still lingering: How are they going to include Teresa’s character in this film? She was a character in the first book and film but in the second book we don’t see her character for a while. Yet in the trailer she was shown very early on. This could be one of two things: either that scene was from further along in the film or something got changed from the book to film adaptation as things often do.Now this question doesn’t deter me in the least bit from not wanting to see the film. I still want to see the film; it’s just that this question is in the back of my mind every time I think about the movie.

In The Scorch Trials, we’re introduced to a crop of new characters including Jorge and Brenda, two “cranks” that Thomas and the gang run into on their journey. Cranks are people who have contracted this disease called The Flare and what happens to people who have this disease is that they eventually lose their minds and their sense of humanity. Jorge and Brenda aren’t there yet anyway. Thomas and his friends have a mission to get to a safe haven in two weeks to find a death cure because they have contracted the Flare. Thomas makes a promise to Jorge and Brenda that they will help them get the cure provided that they help them on their way to the safe haven.

The people in charge of giving Thomas and his friends these tests are from an organization called WICKED. That’s exactly what these people are is wicked because they’re experimenting on children. They’re having them go through all of these horrible things just to see how they react to them. There is a main goal but the Gladers (that’s what Thomas and his friends are called) don’t know what that goal is yet. It will be interesting to see how this all plays out on the big screen.

The Scorch Trials hits theaters on September 18th. You can watch a trailer for the film here. In the meantime if you haven’t read the book you can find it in our catalog. The first book, The Maze Runneris available in our catalog, as is the first movie.

  1. I love these books! I was disappointed with the first movie, so I’m not really thinking very highly of the 2nd movie- though I will watch it anyway lol

I absolutely love love love these books! I am always on the look out for novels with a male protagonist! I think they are more common now than they were a few years ago. I thought the first movie was entertaining but not super amazing. I did NOT like the girl they cast for Teresa, so it was a disappointment for me right from the start. The maze was really well done though. I will definitely be watching the second movie but maybe I will just simply look at it as a project on its own that has nothing to do with the original text. I think I will be less disappointed that way :)
