The nose knows, or know your nose.

In honor of my impending visit to the ear, nose, and throat doctor (nothing serious, thankfully) I present to you a list of books about our friend the nose.

• Apel, Melanie Ann – Cocaine and Your Nose: The Incredibly Disgusting Story
• Barbara, Anna – Invisible Architecture: Experiencing Places Through the Sense of Smell
• Burr, Chandler – The Emperor of Scent: a Story of Perfume, Obsession, and the Last Mystery of the Senses
• Glaser, Gabrielle – The Nose: a Profile of Sex, Beauty and Survival
• Herz, Rachel – The Scent of Desire: Discovering Our Enigmatic Sense of Smell
• Judd, Sandra – Ear, Nose, and Throat Disorders Sourcebook
• MacDonald, Greville – A Treatise on Diseases of the Nose and its Accessory Cavities (This one was published in 1890!)
• Taylor, Michael – Rembrant’s Nose: of Flesh & Spirit in the Master’s Portraits

                        

Of course, one simply cannot discuss noses without mentioning Edmond Rostand and Cyrano de Bergerac. And since our library is awesome, we have many different versions of that classic for you to choose from:

• a graphic novel adaptation by Peter David and Kyle Baker,
• a French film starring Gerard Depardieu,
• a five act opera on DVD (or a score with only four acts – I was confused at first, but Tim tells me that it’s a different opera),
• a teen-friendly novelization,
• a set of Cliff’s Notes for the extra lazy or the extra rushed,
• a modern translation of the play, and
• a copy of the original play in French (sorry, this one’s reference).

Remember, don’t take your nose for granted – lest someone stick a tiny camera up it, or use a larger camera to make a movie about it.
