Sir Walter Scott and Classic Comics

It’s funny how the mind works sometimes. I noticed that today (August 15) is the birthday of Sir Walter Scott (1771), author of Ivanhoe and numerous other great stories and poems. I can still remember one of the first comic books I ever read as a child was a tattered copy of Classic Comics Presents Ivanhoe. It was among a selection of offerings in the barber shop my father used to take my brother and me to back in the 1970’s. It had no name, and Clare, my barber at the time, used to answer the phone “Barber Shop,” as if his tidy little operation was the only one in business in Pittsburgh.

There are now plenty of other ways to enjoy Ivanhoe, although I am still partial to the classic comic versions.
